Climate Change

EXPOSED

Don't believe everything you see at first glance. Context counts for everything. Be aware. A changing climate is prevalent, but not as much as some reports and fact sheet may suggest. Data, graphics and facts are controlled and composed in a manner as to suggest huge changes. This archive is a highly manipulated compilation of public social media commentary that responds to the concept of climate change. Comments are taken out of context, given a new meaning under 1 of the 4 'burning climate change questions' and scaled based on their standalone rationality. It is easy to be fooled by highly constructed and dramatised data and facts...

*Sigh* Narcissistic humans at work. The Earth isn't dying. It has been around 4.5 billion years. It survived a collision with multiple asteroids and even a planet. Even if you assert that life on Earth is "dying," life on Earth has survived at least four extinction events, each worse than anything we've ever experienced. We've (humans) have only been on this planet for about 200,000 years. We could launch every nuclear weapon we have on a single point on Earth and it would barely shift the tilt of the planet. It is truly narcissistic to think we could actually harm the planet. Whether we wipe ourselves out tomorrow or a million years from now, life on Earth will continue.

Tony, we have less than 200 years of scientific data for a very limited group of phenomena. For other phenomena, equally or even more important, such as clouds, we have less than 20 years of reliable data. Ice cover data falls in between those extremes, nearer the shorter term. Yes, things are changing; climate stability has never existed on this planet. That is, there is absolutely no reason to expect anything but climate change at any time scale. The evidence, as opposed to actual measured data, is that the arctic ice cover was easily this low within the last century and probably lower during the MWP. Evidence from Greenland reveals far lower covers within the last few thousand years – clearly not due to anthropic causes. You can be concerned if you want, but it is profoundly unlikely that our actions do anything more than change the order of events.

The Arctic and Antarctic ice melts follow a systematic cyclic pattern similar to Antarctic and Pacific Ocean water temperatures. But they follow opposite pattern. The Arctic ice [here less than 10% of the global total ice is located] is melting and Antarctic ice is building [here more than 80% of the total global ice is located]. Yet this years Arctic ice melt is less than 2012. Also, the winter ice level changes are very small — we only talk of summer ice.

Be careful. The authors "report a recent pause in the growth RATE of atmospheric CO2". The actual concentration of CO2 is still rocketing upwards, due to human emissions, but its rate of increase has slowed slightly. Forests and oceans have always absorbed about 45% of human emissions, but that doesn't solve the problem. It just creates the second carbonate ion problem in the oceans.

Coal has been good for humanity. If we didn't use coal we would have no steel. Without steel we wouldn't have cars, computers, buildings over 3 storeys, many medical instruments etc etc etc. Coal has lifted the world out of poverty and improved living standards so far. Perhaps we should look in our own world if we're worried out climate change. The world had 1.6bn people in 1900. Do people ever think that going to 7bn people as we have now has contributed to much more climate change (with the associated land clearing for buildings, roads, farms etc) than carbon dioxide or methane? We seem to ignore that. Easier to blame other things.
